How Long Should You Keep Your Cosmetics
Here are some general guidelines on how long you should keep cosmetics.
As a general rule makeup should be stored in a cool dry place. Make sure caps are tightly closed.
Toss Anything if - it smells funny, changes colors, irritates your skin or causes breakouts.
Go through your makeup bags and start your cleaning! Out with the old and in with the new. Pick out some new colors for the season! So every time the season changes you should go through your makeup and replace the old with new exciting colors for the season! This way you will never need to worry about using anything past the expiration date.
Mascara - 3 Months - This should be used quickly because it is easily contaminated. Every time you push the brush back into the container you're pushing air (and bacteria) in too. Be sure to also check the pads on your eyelash curler and replace them every time you buy new mascara as well!
Liquid Foundations: 3-6 months - Check the ingredients, a water-based foundation can last up to 12 months, oil-based can last up to 18 months. Powder Foundation or Blush: 1-2 years max - Overtime, they crack, lose their color and can actually start to smell. Toss them.
Eye Shadow Powder 2 years- Eye Shadow Cream, 12-18 months - Cream eye shadows have emulsions that break down over time. Avoid touching the inner part of your eye with the brush. Wash brushes at least once a week. Don't use shadow if you have an eye infection. If you experience irritation, discard any eye shadows you were using during the few weeks prior and during. Your eyes are the most infection-prone area of your face.
Eyeliner: 1 year - Sharpening them discourages bacterial growth, so they're actually fairly safe to use. If you do get an infection while using your eyeliner either throw it out, or you can sharpen it after each use until the infection clears!
Lip liner: 1 years - As with eyeliner, sharpening helps extend their life. However, if you get a cold sore or other irritation from a lip liner, throw it out.
Lipstick and Glosses: 1-2 years - Their pigment and oils preserve lipstick. However, if you get a cold sore from a lipstick, throw it out. If you use a lip brush, wash it twice a week. Colors will change after a year or so, even if you keep them in a cool, dark place. Ladies who keep theirs in a purse should know that body heat and outdoor/indoor heat will also affect the consistency of lipsticks. (check for humid drops on the lipsticks) What everyone agrees on is that if it smells rancid, throw it out, it's spoiled.
